Understanding Highly Sensitive Body

According to Dr. Elaine Aron, the author of the national bestseller, Highly Sensitive Person (HSP), about 15-20% of the population may have the trait of high sensitivity. Being an HSP your nervous system is more sensitive to your surroundings. Your brain reacts deeper to the signals sent by your sense organs. You are easily over stimulated, stressed out and overwhelmed by stresses others think nothing of. According to Dr. Elaine Aron, you are probably a HSP if you:

  • Being easily overwhelmed by such things as bright lights, strong smells, coarse fabrics, or nearby sirens
  • Becoming stressed when there is a lot to do in a short amount of time
  • Needing to withdraw after a busy day into a place that offers privacy and relief from the situation
  • Noticing or enjoying delicate or fine scents, tastes, sounds, or works of art
  • Having a rich and complex inner life
  • As a child, being perceived by parents or teachers as sensitive or shy

Your child is probably a Highly Sensitive Child if he/she:

  • Complains about scratchy clothing, seams in socks, or labels against his/her skin
  • Is sensitive to sound, smells and texture
  • Learns better from a gentle correction than strong punishment
  • Is hard to get to sleep after an exciting day
  • Doesn't do well with big changes
  • Notices the distress of others
  • Is a perfectionist
  • Performs best when strangers aren't present
  • Feels things deeply

Psychological aspect of the HSP has been well studied. However, physiological aspect of The Highly Sensitive has never been mentioned or discussed. Here I introduce a new term, the Highly Sensitive Body (HSB), a model system to study physiological characteristics of this special population, their unique health concerns and the special lifestyle and dietary requirements for them to maintain a healthy and balanced life.

Two of the most common disease-driven forces in modern life are the toxins and stresses, which cause immune dysfunction and push our body into a situation that we have never seen in entire human history. Due to the sensitive nature, the HSB is venerable to and has a difficult time in dealing with toxins and stresses. The physiological characteristics of the HSB may include the followings:

  1. Sensitive to emotional stress: According to ancient Chinese medicine, emotions are processed through specific energetic pathways called meridians in the body. A strong emotional impact results in meridian blockages and further leads to physiological problems. For the HSB, emotions have deeper and broader impacts to the body and easily cause energetic detoxification blockages and body imbalances. Any health concerns of the HSB may have emotional component. Thus, addressing emotional blockage properly is necessary to help resolve health issues of the HSB.

  1. Sensitive to harmful energetic frequencies: electromagnetic frequencies, radiations and geopathic stresses such as radon gas is able to cause switches in our energetic polarity system. Polarity switch hurts the HSB because it creates chaotic energy communications and makes the stress more damaging to the body. Avoiding overuse of electronic devices such as computers, cell phones and TV is crucial for the health of HSB. Checking for radon at home and in the water system also help to exclude hidden danger for chronic health issues.

  1. Easily develop into adrenal fatigue syndrome: stresses from work, family, past emotional trauma, finances and physical discomfort all trigger adrenal stress. Long-term stresses cause malfunction of the hypothalamus-pituitary-adrenal system, which leads to insomnia, fatigue, mood swings, anxiety and depression. Adrenal fatigue syndrome is the root issue for hypersensitive immune responses and leads to a vicious cycle of hypersensitivities. For the HSB, adequate amount of rest and sleep is necessary to maintain their healthy life. Exercise and relaxation such as Yuga and meditation also help to reduce adrenal stress.

  1. Have more food and environmental sensitivities: the HSB easily develops sensitivities to any substances they are exposed to frequently. This sensitivity is “energetic” response and different from “allergy”, a term used by conventional medicine to describe an antigen-antibody reaction. Energetic sensitivity happens prior to the development of the antibody--a deeper issue and harder to correct. Avoiding common allergens such as wheat, dairy and refined sugar helps to reduce food sensitivities. Rotation diet may also prevent future development of food allergies.

  1. Responds to medication and supplement differently: the HSB often have adverse reactions towards medications & supplements. Thus mild over-the-counter medications may work better than prescribed ones, and single herbal remedies may work better than complex formula or high potency homeopathic remedies.  In order to correct this issue, hypersensitivity and polarity switch has to be addressed.

Overall, HSPs know their bodies are somewhat function differently compare to other people. They are highly intelligent, creative and accomplished, yet easily overwhelmed and stressed. They try to eat the most health foods but still struggle with food sensitivities and digestive issues. They try to live in an extreme allergen-free environment (no carpet, animals and chemicals) but still have signs of environmental allergies. They seem to be deficient in vitamins and minerals but nutritional supplements never agree with them for a long time. Many HSPs responded poorly to healing protocols that work for their friends and coworkers. If the above somewhat describes you, you DO have a highly sensitive body.

Dr. Harry Hong is a licensed acupuncture specialized in holistic healing for the Highly Sensitive. He teaches highly sensitive people to listen to their body and take charge of their own health. With his own systematic IBMT protocol that includes Chinese medicine, modern homeopathy, energetic testing and allergy desensitization, Dr. Hong helps Highly Sensitive people to gain back their immune strength and get their life back. He has offices in both south Florida and Chicago. Please also visit his website at www.highlysensitivebody.com.
